Acid Reflux Disease Causes.

If you belong to the three G’s brigade, grab, go and gulp, then you are a prime candidate for GERD. This rushed eating is one of the acid reflux disease causes.

Similarly, if you eat too quickly at home and also eat too much, this is putting your whole digestive apparatus under pressure. If you are too full and then have a nice siesta, this is asking for trouble, You can avoid these situations by going for a walk as any movement will stop the acid reflux from coming up into the gullet. Also, drinking a glass of water will certainly help.

If you thought that dairy products like milk could be soothing and you happen to drink a quite a lot of it, then you may be doing yourself a disservice as the milk, while initially soothing, actually creates proteins and acid which can only aggravate the situation. The same goes for any dairy products which are mildly acidic and also contain fats which you should avoid, or at least consume in moderation.

Another one of the acid reflux disease causes is our actual consumption of acidic foods and those which will relax the LES (oesophagal sphincter) so that the acid will back up into the gullet. The main culprits seem to be alcohol, coffee, chocolate and citrus fruits like oranges and lemons. I have found that eating an apple will certainly help as it has a low acid content.

Of course in the long run, there are risks as the acidic content can damage the delicate lining of the gullet as it does not normally encounter this visitor. There are therefore long term risks if GERD is a chronic problem as that can damage the lining . It could also lead to cancer of the oesophagus.

The problem of inflammation and irritation is not a problem in the stomach as it has a protective coating as it normally encounters the acidic content as we digest.

Another solution is to produce more saliva to help the digestive process. Chewing gum which is not mint flavoured can be a help.
